Acceptable Matrices:

Unacceptable Matrices:

Samples with high levels of salt may not give reliable results.

Method Description:

Following an enzymatic digestion designed for foods, the sample is homogenized with tetrahydrofuran in order to extract the carotenoids. The extract is then filtered and quantitated using reverse phase HPLC with UV/Vis detection.



Additional Information:

α and ß-carotenes are plant pigments. This method measures the quantity of fortified and natural occurring α & ß-carotenes in food products. Carotenes and Retinol can be added together (as IU’s) for the NLEA nutrition label.

High salt content may interfere with analysis.
